PAUL SINOGUI
IMF # 64728
Marriage and Family Therapist Intern

"I am bound by my memories and experiences, yet they continue to set me free."
                                                   - Paul Sinogui

My Areas of Expertise: Just as my quote states, I believe we are forever tied to our life experiences and memories. I believe each individual has the power to decide how such experiences and memories will affect the present and the future. By adopting such a concept, a person can continue moving forward, by deciding not to be held down by a negative but rather choosing to create a positive through personal empowerment. It is my belief that each of us holds our own empowerment within. My hope is to help my clients retrieve such personal empowerment so they can progress forward. As your therapist my responsibility in the process is to provide a comfortable therapeutic environment where a level of personal safety is felt, a level of confidentiality is assured and where a level of trust and rapport can be established. I provide therapy services to both children and adults living with anxiety, depression, sexual and or domestic abuse, PTSD, grief, trauma, transitional families and addiction. My therapeutic approach is geared toward the needs of my client; such approaches include Solution Focused, Cognitive-  Behavioral Therapy, Structural Family Therapy and Bowenian Family Therapy.

"The most beautiful things in life can't be seen or even heard. They must be felt with the heart."
                                                        -Helen Keller

My Areas of Expertise: I am an MFT Intern and local Art Therapist who also uses Photo Therapy techniques, play therapy and sand tray depending what helps you in the most effective ways. I have practiced in a variety of settings with a variety of different clientele. I have eight years experience working with clients in private and group settings. Words alone are not enough to express what you feel. All humans remember in the form of images and attach those images to emotional responses. This is especially true when people are faced with the complex issues of grief, violence, abuse, neglect or coping with a disability. That is why Art Therapy needs to become an integral part of treatment. Art Therapy gives you a voice to express a wide range of emotions and helps you work through conflicts and traumas with the guidance of trained therapists. With the use of unique art tasks developed just for your personal treatment, I can help you become conscious of what's going on in your mind and body. This can further assist in memory recognition, healing, and executive brain function. *There is NO art experience needed. It's about the process of doing the art and NOT the end product. There is no one who cannot do this. It is very adaptive to anyone and their needs.
Education: M.A. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy and an Art Therapy Certificate from Notre Dame de Namur UniversityB.A. in Psychology with a Minor and Certificate in Gerontology and Minor and Certificate in Art from Sonoma State University.

"Our prevailing narratives provide the vocabulary that sets our realities. Our destinies are opened or closed in terms of the stories that we construct to understand our experiences."
                                                   -Harry Goolishian

My Areas of Expertise: No matter how much we have in common with the relationships we have, each of us remains a unique human being. The differences between us will possibly cause conflict such as constant bitter arguments, pervasive relationship problems or power and control struggles.  With such, we feel hurt or ignored, resentful or angry, and our arguments often make the problem worse with situations that often make us feel helpless. With such, counseling strive to help us make sense of our own experience and learn skills needed to live more effectively and reach its potential. These skills might include learning how to communicate with others; practicing ways to resolve conflicts; becoming more assertive; gain greater control over thoughts and feelings, identify concerns and exploring new ways to deal with them or identifying decision-making strategies. Often these skills can alleviate the powerlessness that we feel when we are unable to communicate our emotions directly and can assist us in engaging more fully in our lives. Therefore, it is my desire to lead you through the process of exploring concerns, coming to a greater understanding of problems, and making those changes in your lives.
Each individual is unique; therefore our motivations and needs are different from person to person. With such, my approaches are customized according to your needs. It is my desire and goal to listen carefully and empathically, non-judgmentally, encourage exploration of thoughts and feelings, assist individuals in gaining new perspectives on problems, and motivate individuals to take actions to improve their lives. I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families from all backgrounds. It’s an honor and privilege to walk with you through this journey.
My interest comes from a variety of psychotherapy approaches such as brief and inter-generational models. In addition, to loss and grief, anxiety, anger management, major life changes, and relationships or family issues.
